Competitive aufguss
Competitive aufguss is Aufguss performed under an organiser’s timing, qualification and judging system, typically in show and modern-classic divisions. It is a performance sport derived from sauna ritual, not a definition of routine sessions: dated rules describe those competitions and can change between editions, while everyday guided rounds follow house practice and operational safety guidance.[1]
Spectators should not copy competition intensity into recreational visits.
Formats and judging
Under the cited 2026 show rules a performance lasts 12–15 minutes including welcome and farewell and is assessed for professionalism, heat increase and distribution, waving, fragrance and theme; separate 2025 Modern Classic rules also specify 12–15 minutes but centre mainly on functional towel work with limited choreography.[1][2] Aufguss towel techniques and Aufguss fan techniques are therefore judged differently by division, while distribution, Sauna fragrance handling and Löyly control remain common elements. Aufguss towel, Aufguss ice ball, Sauna fan and Sauna programme staging serve the entry where the rules allow.
Classic aufguss, Meditative aufguss and Themed aufguss describe style families that competitions draw on; Sauna theatre describes the most elaborate show end. Sauna master, Sauna ceremony, Sauna rituals and Sauna culture place the role; Sauna etiquette for audiences (punctuality, silence where directed, no disruption) mirrors participant norms.
Safety context
Competition heat, duration and performance pressure exceed comfortable recreational levels by design. Training and qualification events need the same operational backbone as routine sessions — briefing, voluntary participation, free exit, observation for unwell participants, and altered or stopped sequences where needed — plus athlete-specific scheduling and recovery given repeated heat plus muscular work.[3] General heat precautions apply to all present.[4]
