Classic aufguss
Classic aufguss is the functional, heat-distribution-centred style of Aufguss in which water or ice application and skilful towel work matter more than story, costume or choreography. It is the reference against which quieter (Meditative aufguss), narrative (Themed aufguss) and judged (Competitive aufguss) variants define themselves. Like all guided sessions it is prepared and led by a Sauna master within a Sauna ceremony and Sauna programme, with voluntary participation and free exit.[1]
Classic does not mean unskilled: broad room circulation and directed movements must still suit cabin geometry and occupancy.
Conduct
Preparation, briefing, staged applications in two or three rounds (a regional convention, not a defining number), pauses and closing airing follow the same operational logic as other Aufguss formats. Distribution uses Aufguss towel techniques with an Aufguss towel, flag or fan, and where fans are used, Aufguss fan techniques; tools shape distribution and convective transfer after evaporation, they do not create vapour. Technique avoids aggressive movements and direct face fanning.[1]
Aufguss ice ball and Sauna fragrance are optional and format-dependent; water alone suffices for many classic rounds. Where scent is used, identifiable products, prior dilution and compliant dosing apply, with neat oils never placed directly on stones.
Competition clarifies classic by contrast: cited 2025 Modern Classic rules keep 12–15 minutes but centre mainly on functional towel work with limited choreography, versus show rules that add theme and performance as judged elements.[2] Routine classic sessions follow house practice, not competition scoresheets.
