Sauna oil dosage
Sauna oil dosage is the amount of essential oil or formulated Sauna oil added to sauna water or ambient delivery for scent. Dosing decides whether scent reads as fresh and clean or as stinging, scratchy and headache-inducing: hot stones vaporise oil instantly and heat carries it straight to airways and eyes, so small differences matter greatly. More oil does not make better steam.[1]
Dosage applies to diluted löyly water, bowls and textiles — never to neat oil on stones, which is a fire and irritation hazard.
Orders of magnitude
Trade guidance illustrates: mild oils (lavender, pine, spruce, cedarwood) about three to five drops per 500 ml water; stronger oils (eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, rich florals) about two to three; the most intense (camphor, oregano) one to two; blends capped by total drops (for example two of conifer plus one of eucalyptus per 500 ml).[1] One 500 ml batch typically yields three to five ladles — about one batch per round — with stirring before every ladle because oils float rather than dissolve.[1]
Adjust to cabin volume (small one-to-two-person cabins need less), oil freshness, programme intensity and participants: halve or skip when small children join, keep pets out of scented sessions, and ventilate briefly if scent overwhelms. Start at the low end; adding mid-session is easy, removing excess is not.[2]
Safety framing
Concentration explains caution: bottled oil is 50–100 times plant strength.[3] Basics are: genuine sauna-suitable oils only (not candle/soap synthetics); never neat on stones, panels or heaters; never ingested or added to drinking water; kept from eyes with immediate water rinsing on skin contact; and stored cool, dark and out of children’s reach outside heat.[1] Condition-specific advice for asthma, pregnancy/lactation, epilepsy, medication, allergy and child age governs whether scenting proceeds at all.[4]
